Rome
The St. Regis Rome
Number one on my list as it is where I stayed on my honeymoon, the St. Regis Rome just celebrated its 130th anniversary in 2024. The ultimate in elegance and style, the St. Regis in Rome has been the preferred address for royal families, diplomatic delegations, and VIPs. In 2018, the hotel underwent a significant renovation headed up by architect Pierre-Yves Rochon. The hotel offers the ultimate in classic, refined elegance.
Address: Via Vittorio E. Orlando, 3, Rome, Italy (Stazione Termini Area)
Hotel Palazzo Talìa (Spanish Steps – Trevi Fountain)
Ideally located in the center of Rome, this luxury, boutique hotel is a converted 16th-century palazzo. The designer is the film director Luca Guadagnino, who operates his own design studio. Guests will find period architecture and modern design, as only the Italians can do so well. If your budget permits, the top-floor Talìa Suite is the ultimate in Italian luxury, but the other rooms are also well-designed. There is also a spa modeled after a Roman bath. The hotel restaurant, Tramae, serves Italian classics made from farm-fresh ingredients.
Address: Largo del Nazareno 25, Rome, Italy (Spanish Steps – Trevi Fountain)
Chapter Roma
This popular and chic hotel is pure design with rooms in post-industrial and high-gloss, designer furnishings and quirky neon signs. The rooms and interiors are full of delightful gem-toned Art Deco stylishness and a hint of moody modernism. The hotel features a popular rooftop bar and an art filled lobby bar. The restaurant, Campocori, serves a modern take on classic Roman cuisine.
Address: Via S. Maria de’ Calderari 47, Rome, RM, 00186 (Piazza Navona & the Pantheon)
Umbria Region

Vocabolo Moscatelli Boutique Hotel & Restaurant
In the beautiful region of Umbria (2 hours drive south of Florence and approximately 3 hours drive north of Rome), you will find this incredible and very Italian retreat. The style is a blend of 12th century ancient stone walls from what was once a monastery along with very modern and luxurious furnishings. Enjoy the pool, the bar and the restaurant serving Umbrian cuisine with a global twist.
Address: Via del Refari 2, Calzolaro, Umbertide, Italy
Tuscany Region & Florence

Stella d’Italia
Firenze is not short on elegant hotels and yet the Stella d’Italia shines like a star. The location is exceptional as it resides in a 16th-century palazzo designed by Renaissance architect Giorgio Vasari. Just off the beautiful Via Tornabuoni, guests are just a short walk from the Duomo. The design is stunning, the creative masterpiece of a husband and wife duo. Original paintings, eclectic art objects, old film posters and charming antiques from local flea markets make the interior design truly one of a kind.
Some of the rooms include 18th-century frescoes or perhaps an outdoor terrace with a view of the iconic red rooftops. Guests can enjoy the hearty Tuscan breakfast buffet in the frescoed breakfast room or enjoy aperitivi in the cocktail bar in the evening.
Address: Via de Tornabuoni, 7, Florence, Italy (Santa Maria Novella)
Collegio alla Querce
This is Auberge Resorts’ newest European property and is a timeless retreat where high Renaissance art meets modern Italian design surrounded by the tranquil hills of Tuscany. While it is not located in the actual, historic center of Florence, Collegio alla Querce, Auberge Resorts Collection is located in a 16th-century university complex on a secluded hilltop overlooking the city. Guests can view original fresoces and coffered wood ceilings. The guest rooms are the former classrooms and the former headmaster’s office is now the swanky cocktail and cigar lounge. Olive and oak trees surround the pool and there is a spa on the property as well. The Duomo is a 40 minute walk or a 15 minute car ride away.

Address: Via delle Forbici, Florence, Italy
Hotel Lungarno
Stylish and elegant, as only the Florentines can, the Hotel Lungarno sits proudly on the south side of the Arno River with views of the Ponte Vecchio. While there are many dining options in Florence, the hotel has its own wonderful restaurant and classy bar. The Lungarno has an incredible collection of original 20th century works of art, including works by Picasso and Cocteau.
Address: Borgo San Jacopo 14, Florence, Italy (Oltrarno neighborhood)
Monteverdi Tuscany
Castiglioncello del Trinoro is a medieval village on a hilltop in Tuscany’s Val d’Orcia. After WWII, it was basically abandoned. Rome-based architect Ilaria Miani turned a collection of old homes into a luxury boutique hotel. The rooms are charming with wood-beamed cielings, heated floors and classic Italian linens. Some of the suites include views of the vineyards below.
Some of the suites include two to six bedrooms with common areas and a kitchen and a private garden. The hotel is part of the village with ancient cobblestoned streets leading between guest rooms. There is also a pool, lovely gardens, a spa, a library, a terrace bar an art gallery, a cooking school and a 14th century church used for a concert venue.
Address: Via di Mezzo 2, Castiglioncello del Trinoro, Italy
Venice

Ca’ Pisani Hotel
Hotel Ca’ Pisani is in a five-hundred-year-old merchant townhouse while the interiors and the restaurant, La Rivista, feature Futurist design. The hotel features a Turkish bath and an incredible rooftop terrace. It is ideally situated in Venice, right next to the Peggy Guggenheim foundation and the Accademia Galleries, and most other significant tourist attractions are within a few minutes’ walk.
Address: Rio Terrà Foscarini, 979/a, Venice, Italy (Dorsoduro area)
