Luxury Hotel in Prague: The Alchymist Grand Hotel and Spa
During my recent trip to Prague, I had the chance to stay at the luxury five star hotel, The Alchymist Grand Hotel and Spa. Situated in the “Lesser Town” (Malá Strana) district of Prague, the hotel is a magnificent Baroque house, known as the ‘Dum u Jeziska’ (House of the Jesus Child), dating from the 16th century. At the threshold upon entering there is a stone inlay with the date 1517 A.D. The term “Alchymist” is in reference to the time of Rudolf II, whose court was full of ‘alchemists’ who sought to turn base metals into gold.
For the Architecture fans, the oldest preserved part of the Dum u Jeziska is the rear portion facing the courtyard, which was built after 1591. The lower part of the original tower structure, with its perimeter masonry supported by steel bars, dates from the fortification of the Lesser Town in 1257.
The hotel is linked with several legends. One claims that a convent once stood where the hotel is today. A local num seriously violated the rules of her order. Although the legend doesn’t say what rule she violated, it is assumed that she violated the rule of celibacy and for this, she was bricked alive. Legend claims that her unhappy soul has been wandering throughout the hotel ever since. The legend says that the nun will only be freed when the house built on the former convent is torn down and the nun’s remains are given a proper burial. Rest assured, while I was there, I didn’t see or hear any ghosts!
Location
The hotel is located in the “Lesser Town” (Malá Strana) district, which is one of the oldest and more beautiful neighborhoods in the city. The district sits below Prague Castle and was once part of the Kings’ route, taken by future kings on their way to their coronation, starting in Old Town, crossing the Charles Bridge and winding their way up to St. Vitus Cathedral. The cobblestone streets, lined with picturesque medieval houses, are quieter than the very busy, crowded and touristy Old Town. However, it was a short walk to many restaurants and shops. It was a 10 minute walk up to the castle and cathedral district and a 10 minute walk down to the Charles Bridge.
Upon Arrival
They truly roll out the red carpet for their guests. We were greeted warmly, and the staff was very courteous and attentive. During the check-in process, we were handed cold towels and a glass of champagne. The concierge was very helpful and recommended a wonderful restaurant for one of our nights there.
Luxury Hotel in Prague: The Rooms
The rooms are very well appointed, including robes and slippers. The bed was comfortable, the rooms are air conditioned and the space is very quiet, with no outside street noise, etc. The bathroom was very nice with fluffy towels, high end bath products and a wonderful shower head. There was plenty of storage for all of our belongings and a safe for our valuables.
The Spa
The spa is located in the former cellar – you descend the stairs down into a dark and cozy space and you are greeted by candles and incense. I had a wonderful facial in a rounded stone cellar space complete with a fish tank for the ultimate, relaxing experience. Best of all, they use “Darphin Paris” products which is a brand I love but don’t find often in the US.
The Food
The hotel provides a delicious European breakfast buffet, with eggs, bacon, meats and cheeses, various fresh juices, a variety of breads and baked goods, yogurt and fruit, all within the setting of a beautiful dining room. (On one of the days we were there, the American ambassador to the Czech Republic was dining there.) In addition, the hotel has a wonderful Italian restaurant, which makes its own pasta in house.
Luxury Hotel in Prague: The Hotel Facilities
The hotel is intimate, decorated in the Baroque style. Every afternoon from 4-5, they serve wine and cheese. There is a gorgeous wooden bar serving drinks until midnight each night and various seating areas throughout the hotel, indoor and out, for relaxing or planning out your day. The breakfast dining room was charming and cheerful.
Due to its location, its beautiful décor, the hospitality of the staff and the comfort of the rooms, I highly, highly recommend this hotel for your stay in Prague.
